Mamou: What's new bayou in Midtown Village

The Corner (102 S. 13th St.) in Midtown Village is being touched up (paint and such) in anticipation of an opening of Mamou.

The Corner (102 S. 13th St.) in Midtown Village has been touched up (paint and such) and has reopened as Mamou.

Owner Tony Rim is billing the concept as "rustic Louisiana country translated for a contemporary urban audience."

Several months ago, Rim hired Paul Martin, a former Parc sous chef and chef at Queen Village's Catahoula who most recently opened Strangelove's. Martin's wife, Jackie Derstine, is on board as general manager.

"Mamou" comes from the town in Louisiana, not too far from Martin's family's home in Lafayette.

Martin and Rim debated other concepts - all more generic - before settling on Louisiana. "In this neighborhood, you need to have a focus," Martin said.

Dinner menu (here) runs the gamut from po'boys on rolls shipped up from Leidenheimer to oyster shots to gumbo to the feature entree, skillet-roasted Louisiana red fish-crawfish tomato fricassee, leek confit, butter bean puree ($25). It's open nightly.

Brunch menu, served Saturday and Sunday, is here.

Bohdan Darway runs the beverage program. (See drink menu here.)

Mamou features an upstairs whiskey and cocktail bar, and open air roof deck that holds 35.
