Media landmark Towne House to close

The D'Ignazio family is selling.

The Towne House's 65 years on Veterans Square in Media are now numbered.
Management on Wednesday told staff that the restaurant has been sold and that the dining room will close for a la carte business effective Oct. 31.
Its banquet rooms will honor reservations through the end of the year, said a receptionist.

In 1950, Silvio F. "Babe" D'Ignazio Jr. purchased a shot-and-beer joint called Ma Kelly's in a rowhouse on State Street near the Delaware County Courthouse. He opened it the next year as the Towne House, and eventually expanded to two adjacent buildings. He rebuilt the restaurant in 1960 after a fire and filled it with antiques, according to his 2008 obit. Babe D'Ignazio lived to age 90. His wife, Libby, died May 29. The couple's four children are listed as owners.

In a statement provided to the Delaware County Times, management said: "The D'Ignazio family is confident that this company will be a good business partner with the town of Media and local residents."

The buyer's identity was not disclosed. An application for a liquor-license transfer does not appear in the state's database.

A check of our database shows a recipe for the Townhouse's signature salad with Maytag blue cheese dressing. Have at it.
