Philly Cupcake sets its last day on Chestnut St.
"We attracted other businesses and then the attention of big developers," one of the owners told the Philadelphia Daily News' Ronnie Polaneczky. "Now all the big projects are killing us - and we're the ones who made this area a viable place to do business."
Philly Cupcake, battered by three huge construction projects within a block, has announced that its last day at 12th and Chestnut Streets will be Saturday, Oct. 17.
(Oh, how cruel: Sunday, Oct. 18 is National Cupcake Day.)
Philly Cupcake owners Johnny Columbo and Michael Lewis recently told the Philadelphia Daily News' Ronnie Polaneczky how they helped boost the area six years ago but saw their hard work backfire.
"We baked the cupcakes in the windows for everybody to see," Columbo said. "We brought light, energy and theater to an area that was dark and dirty and deserted. We attracted other businesses and then the attention of big developers. Now all the big projects are killing us - and we're the ones who made this area a viable place to do business."
On Facebook, the men have announced that they are selling their equipment starting Oct. 20.
