Philly won't get that Jimmy Smits drama

"Outlaw," whose pilot was shot here this spring, has been picked up on NBC's schedule. But the series will be shot on sound stages in California.

NBC has green-lit the Jimmy Smits legal drama that was shot around Philly and at Resorts in Atlantic City in March and early April.

Alas, Philly has learned that Outlaw won't be shot here, after all, as Greater Philadelphia Film Office head Sharon Pinkenson has confirmed.

Outlaw, in which Garza plays a playboy Supreme Court justice who quits to go into private practice, is on the fall schedule for 10 p.m. Fridays.

During production, there was some optimism that the show, once known as Garza, would be shot here and take advantage of Pennsylvania tax credits, which have dried up.

Supposedly Smits was not wild all along about the prospects of a cross-country relo, so the series will be done on sound stages in California. Some exteriors will be shot in D.C., where the show is based.

The show, by writer/producer John Eisendrath (Alias, Felicity), is produced by Universal Media Studios and Conan O'Brien's production company, Conaco. Smits has an executive-producer credit.

You'll note a few Philadelphia/A.C. sites in the trailer below, including Resorts' floor, a house on Delancey Place, the Parkway, obligatory chopper shot over the Ben Franklin Bridge to show the skyline. (And dang -- that really is RZA of Wu-Tang Clan as a guy on death row.)
