Report: PYT in New York has closed

A for-rent sign hangs in the window.

The East Village blog EV Grieve reports the apparent demise, after three months, of the New York City outpost of PYT, the burger bar that got its start at the Piazza at Schmidt's before it closed last fall.

The blog notes that a for-rent sign hangs in the window at 334 Bowery. The shutdown also covers SRO, a speakeasy-style pizzeria next door.

The PYT location, a snazzy spot brimming with retro gamer kitsch, opened in October amid a flurry of changes in the organization.

At the time, owner Tommy Up said he was closing in Northern Liberties after six-plus years - and shutting down the adjacent bar Emmanuelle - to devote time to the New York location, which was about to open.

Up also said then that PYT would resurface - in a larger format - in May 2016 across the street from the Fillmore Philadelphia, in a former dry-ice storage warehouse at Canal and Allen Streets, just off Frankford Avenue.

The status of that project is unclear, as is the status of those who hold "burger a day" discount cards.

Up, also a partner in Fishtown tiki bar The Yachtsman, did not return a text seeking comment. The New York location's phone simply rings, and the Facebook page - last updated New Year's Day - gives no indication of woe. Yelp reviews pointed out erratic hours.
