Restaurant notes: Aneu beginning in Berwyn; Minar upgrades

Meridith's flips.

  1. Meridith's American Bistro in Berwyn has remodeled throughout, and along with the brighter but cozier look. Meridith McLoughlin has changed the name. That is, Aneu name. Aneu -- that's Greek roughly for "without." Centerpiece is a cream and ivory marble-topped bar, the restaurant's new focal point. Chef Joseph Malandrucco has changed menus and a bar menu is now available from 3 p.m. till closing. There are now 30 wines under $30, a play on the restaurant's Route 30 location (575 Lancaster Ave.)  Here are lunch, dinner, bar, and dessert menus, plus the wine list.

  2. Get thee to Jersey, as the South Jersey Restaurant Week brims with $25 and $35 four-course specials at dozens of eateries through Friday (Oct. 22). List is here.

  3. Minar Palace, whose calling card through the years has been inexpensive but delicious Indian food served (alas) with paper plates and plastic cutlery, has upgraded. "The cafeteria style of service for dinner has now been upgraded to a more intimate and enjoyable experience," owner Davinder Singh emails from 1304 Walnut St. "Chinaware and authentic Indian bowls and utensils shipped directly from India are now being used to enhance your dining experience. Also, as a BYOB Minar encourages you to bring in your favorite bottle of wine or beer and enjoy it without paying a corkage fee. Wine glasses and ice to keep your bottles chilled are available upon request for no extra charge."

  4. The Ooka location at 764 Bethlehem Pike in Montgomeryville is launching a sushi school -- hour-long classes at which sharp implements are used. The first class, titled Sushi 101, will meet at the restaurant at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7. It's $30 a head and enrollment can be done on the phone, 215-361-1119.

  5. Chefs Georges Perrier (Le Bec-Fin) and Monica Glass (pastry chef at 10 Arts) and Silvana Nardone (former editor in chief at Every Day With Rachael Ray magazine and author of Cooking for Isaiah) are joining the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) and Thomas Jefferson University and Hospitals for the seventh annual Appetite for Awareness. It's a gluten-free showcase, from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday (10/24) at the Philadelphia Cruise Terminal at Pier One at the Navy Yard. In addition to sampling from 35 restaurants and a marketplace, there will be a children's pavilion. Tickets in advance are $50 for adults, $25 for students with ID and $20 for children under 12. It's $75/$35/$25 at the door. Info at  www.CeliacCentral.org.
