Sonata's first night

The Northern Liberties BYOB is to open Tuesday.

Mark Tropea is looking at Tuesday (July 21) as the opening night of Sonata Restaurant, the BYOB taking over the spot in Liberties Walk in Northern Liberties that previously housed Swallow (1030 N. American St., 215-238-1240).

When I wrote about the deal on June 5, Tropea said he would open in July, and he's made good on his promise.

In a press release, Tropea said he'd offer "contemporary American fare in inventive and unique presentations. Its menu boasts savory ingredients infused with flavors of the summer."

Tropea was executive sous chef at the Desmond Hotel in Great Valley for seven years.

Krystal Weaver, a Brasserie Perrier alumna, is the sous and pastry chef.

Among dishes (apps $7-$12, entrees $19-$27):

House-made duck prosciutto (with cantaloupe, frisee and candied pistachio)
Gazpacho with cucumber sorbet
Braised short rib (with celery root puree and braised carrot)
Olive oil-poached salmon (with watercress puree, walnut pesto and grilled fennel)
Mediterranean chickpea patties with feta cheese, yogurt and confit tomatoes

Passion fruit panna cotta
polenta cake with sweet corn salsa
vanilla bean cheesecake topped with pineapple jalapeño chutney
Black Forest cake/chocolate profiterole/chocolate beignet trio
