Urban Village: A brewpub at Schmidt's Commons

In a spacious, wood-clad setting at the former Piazza at Schmidt's, they've set up 12 taps of a wide range of beers.

Urban Village Brewing Co. (1001 N. Second St., 267-687-1961), at Schmidt's Commons in Northern Liberties, is the dream project of Dave Goldman, a home-brewer and a founder of the Landmark Americana sports bars, and business partner Tom Revelli, a longtime Landmark manager.

Opening date is June 1.

In a spacious, wood-clad setting at the former Piazza at Schmidt's, they've set up 12 taps of a wide range of beers. Pennsylvania draft wines and spirits round out the bar list. (Specialties: Beets By J, a 3 percent ABV, kettle-soured Berliner weisse that is made from beets; and Rye Bread, an IPA that is brewed with caraway.)

Revelli describes UV's pizza-beer philosophy as "beer is only liquid bread." Chef Chris Davis (ex-Barbuzzo and Farmicia) works two ovens - one for pizzas, one for roasted items. A rough draft of the menu is here. Lineup includes apps, pizzas, and sandwiches.

Goldman - who also co-owns Wine Works,  wine/beer/cigar/cheese shop in Marlton - came to the professional brewing game comparitively recently after completing the University of the Sciences' Brewing Science certificate program.

It seats 160, including 30 at the bar and many outside.

Hours are lunchtime through late night.
