WIP to be heard on FM

Hear the speculation that the CBS sports station will migrate to WYSP? It will -- sort of.

From time to time, followers of radio gossip have spread rumors that WYSP will become a sports station.

Well, it's happening -- in a way.

CBS will simulcast the audio from 610WIP on WYSP's HD radio channel HD-3, effective July 4.

What this means: WYSP will continue to broadcast rock on its usual 94.1 FM frequency, and WIP itself will remain at 610 AM.

If you have an HD radio, you get more stations at each spot on the dial. One click away from WYSP, at 94.1-2, is the HD-quality audio of KYW (1060). The sounds of WIP will appear one click away, at 94.1-3.

To promote HD, beginning Monday (6/29) WIP hosts will give away HD radios to listeners who call in and win.

As for WYSP: My station insiders assure that there are no plans to "flip" its format from rock.

Sports 950 ESPN has been on WMGK's HD-3 channel -- 102.9-3 -- for months.
