Weekend must-tries: Meatballs, cupcakes and bacon bacon bacon

Food & Wine is out with its list of what it calls the best meatballs in the United States, and Gabe and Judy Marabella are basking in the glow of another national honor.

The Food & Wine piece is here.

Also on F&W's list of 20 great balls of fire is NYC's Little Owl, whose South Philly-bred owner Joey Campanaro also runs The Village Belle in Queen Village with his brother, Louis.

The Village Belle's gravy meatball sliders (right), sold as appetizers, combine beef, veal, pork, and pecorino in a magical way.

Cupcakes! Saturday, May 11 is the grand opening of Sweet Box Shop at 339 S. 13th St. in Washington Square West. Owner Gretchen Fantini, who still runs her Sweet Box Truck, has added a brick-and-mortar outlet. (She has someone else driving the truck.) From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Fantini and staff will hand out minis of signature cupcakes and mimosas. While you're there, buy a pint of her rice pudding, studded with golden raisins.

Also up:  It's West Chester Restaurant Week, running through May 16 in the town now newly bereft of free-spending WCU undergrads. Info is here. ... It's Bacon Week at the Tropicana in Atlantic City from May 12 to 18, and every restaurant on-site is getting into the pig. There will be a bacon shake at the Crate A Cone shop and even the Mrs. Fields cookie shop is in on it, too - the workers will be bakin'. Hyuk, hyuk.  Details here. ... Saturday, May 11 is the Stamp Out Hunger food drive, where National Association of Letter Carriers and Campbell's Soup ask you to place nonperishable foods next to the mailbox before Saturday's delivery. More than 200,000 pounds of food was collected locally last year. Info is here.
