Union acquire Costa Rican left back Porfirio Lopez

The Union have made what appears to be a significant move to improve the club's defense, announcing the acquisition of 26-year-old Costa Rican left back Porfirio Lopez.

Lopez's arrival means the Union have a true left back for the first time since Jordan Harvey was traded to the Vancouver Whitecaps in the middle of this past season. Gabriel Farfan played the role after Harvey's departure, and although he performed adequately, it was not his most comfortable position.

Lopez's most recent club was a powerhouse in his native country, Liga Deportiva Alajuelense. Somewhat oddly, he had returned home on a loan from Chinese club Dalian Haichang. While with Alajuelense, Lopez won the 2011 Summer and Winter Championships in the split-season Costa Rican league.

Lopez stands 5 feet, 11 inches, which is pretty good in soccer terms. He will be eligible to join the team upon receiving his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate.
