Q: I like to wear halter tops in the summer, but my back looks flabby. What can I do to tone up my back and shoulders?

- Ms. Halter Top

A: The lat pull-down is probably the best exercise for you to tone your upper back. You'll want to use a straight bar and grip it with your hands shoulder-width apart. Be sure to pull the bar no farther down than your sternum. Don't use momentum, and keep your torso straight.

Performing hyperextensions will tighten and tone your lower back, which will also make your waist appear smaller, too.
