The pastor of a Catholic Church in the Near Northeast was injured today when he fell about 10 feet down an elevator shaft in the rectory.
The Rev. Joseph J. Zingaro, 57, of St. John Cantius Church on Almond Street in the Bridesburg section was taken to Aria Health-Frankford after the 9 a.m. accident.
"He went to use the elevator and didn't realize the car wasn't there. He stepped in and fell," said Dep. Chief Daniel Williams of the Philadelphia Fire Department."
At the bottom of the shaft, Zingaro used his cell phone to call for help.
A rescue squad arrived soon after.
A woman who answered the phone at the rectory said the priest was "alert but banged up."
