William G. Mulvey | Sales manager, 81
William G. Mulvey, 81, of Malvern, retired sales manager for WPVI-TV (Channel 6), died of cancer Tuesday at his home.
Mr. Mulvey began his career in television as assistant to the sales manager at WNHC-TV in New Haven, Conn. Later he worked in sales for other Triangle Publications Inc. stations including WFIL-TV, now 6ABC, in Philadelphia, where he helped syndicate local programs, including
Popeye Theater
, hosted by Sally Starr.
In 1968, after working for stations in California and Connecticut, he returned to Channel 6 as general sales manager. Mr. Mulvey, who retired in 1985, was past president of the Broadcast Pioneers in Philadelphia.
He grew up in Albany, N.Y. His parents had both died by the time he was 4, and he and his younger brother were raised by an aunt and uncle in Drexel Hill. He graduated from West Philadelphia Catholic High School and served in the Army in Germany at the end of World War II.
After his discharge he earned a bachelor's degree from Fordham University in New York. In 1955 he married Patricia Colleran, whom he had met in New Haven.
Mr. Mulvey served on the finance committee and taught religion at SS. Philip and James Church in Exton.
He was a passionate golfer, his daughter Kerry said, and played at Chester Valley Golf Club in Malvern.
In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr. Mulvey is survived by sons Kevin and Christopher; daughters Susan Tyson, Betsy Davis and Lynn McFerron; and five grandchildren.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow and from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. Monday at Alleva Funeral Home, 1724 E. Lancaster Ave., Paoli. A Funeral Mass will be said at SS. Philip and James Church, 723 E. Lancaster Ave., Exton. Burial will be in St. Monica Cemetery, Berwyn.
