Malvern gets tricky in win over GA

The first rule of running trick plays is to conceal the notion that trickery is afoot. Malvern Prep junior wide receiver Matt Daller did that twice Saturday during the Friars' 34-7 Inter-Ac victory at Germantown Academy.

The first rule of running trick plays is to conceal the notion that trickery is afoot.

Malvern Prep junior wide receiver Matt Daller did that twice Saturday during the Friars' 34-7 Inter-Ac victory at Germantown Academy.

The first came on fourth and 5 near midfield when the punter Garrett Reilly flipped the ball on a reverse to Quinn McCahon. He threw to Daller for an 18-yard gain near the Friars' sideline.

"I think the biggest thing was not to tip it off and look where I was going," Daller said. "You have to stay calm. That was probably the biggest thing for me."

The drive eventually led to Daller's scoring on a 41-yard pass from Kevin Doyle on third and goal from the 41-yard line.

The Friars (6-2, 2-1) had reached the end zone twice on that drive, but both were negated by penalties, including Zac Fernandez's 31-yard reception on third and goal on the preceding play.

Malvern's second bid at subterfuge came on a fourth-and-8 play near midfield in the fourth quarter, with the Friars ahead by 21-7.

Rashon Lusane took the snap as a punter, took a few steps right, looked up, and hit a well-covered Daller near the right hash mark.

"The second time, I saw one of the linebackers floating back with me so I thought it would be covered up, but I kind of cut in a little bit," Daller said. "And I had confidence in Rashon."

O'Shaan Allison finished with 118 rushing yards on 18 carries and added 57 more yards and a touchdown on three receptions for the Friars.

Doyle finished 12 of 29 for 210 yards and two scoring tosses. Daller finished with three catches for 80 yards and a score.

For Germantown Academy (7-1, 2-1), Kyle McCloskey, who played with an injured, non-throwing hand, threw to Mike Gilmore for the Patriots' lone score.

"We lost last week to Haverford School [31-14]," Daller said, "so this sets up a great ending to our season. Our goal is to go 3-0 [the rest of the way] and finish 9-2, and this might be the start of that."
