A 20-year-old man was killed in a quadruple shooting across the street from a school playground late Wednesday afternoon in the city’s Kingsessing section, police said.

The victims were standing in a group of about eight people outside a corner variety store at 55th Street and Kingsessing Avenue just before 4:15 p.m. when a male in a dark, hooded sweatshirt walked up and opened fire, said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

A second male also started shooting, possibly returning fire. It was not clear whether that man was part of the group that had been outside the corner store, Small said.

Police found 25 spent shell casings at the scene but no guns. And no guns were found on the four victims.

The 20-year-old man, who was not identified, was shot approximately 11 times throughout his body. He was transported by medics to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:36.

A 29-year-old man who was shot five times was reported in critical but stable condition at the hospital. A 23-year-old man was shot three times and was listed in stable condition. A 19-year-old man was shot in the elbow and also was listed as stable.

Small said the group was standing next to a memorial with teddy bears for a person who was fatally shot at the location last year. Next to the wall of the store there were several paint trays and paint rollers and brushes. It was unclear if any of the victims were involved with the painting on the wall.
