You’re breaking the ribs!

Later this month, Rocky fans will be able to a take a jab at recreating the film’s famous meat-punching scene outside Reading Terminal Market.

“I hit the beef, here, and I kinda liked it,” Rocky Balboa, played by Sylvester Stallone, said in the 1976 blockbuster while talking to a news reporter about his inventive training method: beating slabs of beef inside an icebox.

The Oct. 24 event is part of the Philadelphia Visitor Center’s “Rocky Season,” months of citywide programming honoring the distinctly Philly movie’s 50th anniversary.

“Rocky, much like Reading Terminal, is a cornerstone of Philadelphia culture,” Annie Allman, CEO and general manager of Reading Terminal Market, said in a statement.

“We are happy to work with the Visitor Center to celebrate the impact of this film by offering Philadelphians a chance to be a part of an iconic moment while giving back to our community.”

What’s going on?

Reading Terminal Market will shut down Filbert Street on Oct. 24 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For a $20 donation, attendees can recreate the famous scene by throwing a punch at a frozen beef cut. The donations will benefit the market’s pantry, which feeds Philadelphians in need, according to a news release.

And don your best gray sweatsuit and black Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars for the Italian Stallion look-alike contest from noon to 1 p.m., as well as Rocky-inspired treats and music.

What will people be punching?

Participants will take their swings at a 225-pound, 5-foot-long hind quarter, supplied by Martin’s Quality Meats, a spokesperson said. Afterward, the meat will be donated to area zoos, the news release said.

South Philly fighter Johnny “Cannoli” Garbarino will open the event with the first punch.

What can attendees win?

Those who square up against the hind will have their photo professionally taken, while the first 50 people to sign up will receive Reading Terminal Market-branded beanies.

The winner of the look-alike contest — as decided by Allman and the audience — will get a $250 gift card.
