The 38-year-old outfielder signed a minor league contract with the Phillies in June.
Veteran outfielder Tommy Pham will get another chance to play in the majors this season. But it won’t be with the Phillies.
With the Phillies deciding to carry a third catcher when active rosters expand to 28 players on Tuesday, they traded Pham to the White Sox for cash considerations, a league source confirmed Monday. Because Pham will be in the White Sox’s organization before Sept. 1, he will be eligible to play in the postseason.

Pham, a 38-year-old right-handed hitter, signed a minor-league contract with the Phillies in June. But the Phillies didn’t promote him from triple A because they have gotten production from righty-hitting outfielders Derek Hill and Bryan De La Cruz.
In 189 plate appearances for Lehigh Valley, Pham batted .250 with nine doubles, two triples, three homers, and a .772 OPS.
This will be his second stint with the White Sox. He has played for 10 major league teams since he debuted for the Cardinals in 2014.
