Calexico facing eviction before it opens

A writ of possession has been served to order out the occupants by April 13.

The long-delayed Calexico is facing eviction before it even opens at 1600 South St.

A writ of possession has been served, ordering the occupants to split by April 13, according to documents filed in Municipal Court. The landlord filed suit in January, contending that it was owed $77,000 in back rent.

The California-Mexican restaurant said in August 2013 that it had chosen the new building at 16th and South Streets for its first restaurant outside of New York. A second location was later announced at Frankford and Girard Avenues in Fishtown.

Messages left with Calexico's Philadelphia operator have not been returned.
