How about a Center City bagel boom

Two more Montreal-style bagel shops are looking at Midtown Village.

Center City's bagel scene is in line to get a whole lot more interesting.

I'm hearing that Mount Royal Bagel Company, the Marlton-based baker of Montreal-style bagels, is in deep negotiations for a lease in a storefront on 13th Street just below Walnut Street, across from Woody's. Norm Vosko, the Montreal-bred owner, said he and the landlord are hammering out details about installing his wood-fired ovens.

In addition, Larry Rosenblum of Spread Bagelry - the Montreal bagel shop on 20th Street in Rittenhouse - is narrowing his own search for a second property, coincidentally in the same Midtown Village neighborhood.

The bagel scene perked up in November with Knead Bagels, a shop at 725 Walnut St. by chef Adam Willner and his wife, Cheri, that sells kettle-boiled bagels in assorted flavors - some traditional and some exotic - along with cheffy spreads and meats.

Next on the horizon will be Chestnut Street Philly Bagels at 1705 Chestnut St., a second location for Queen Village's South Street Philly Bagels. Owner Aaron Wagner is shooting for a January opening.
