Rx The Farmacy in University City branching into sandwiches

FarmGang, named in tribute to bad rap, is part of the experience at the University City restaurant.

Ross Scofield of Rx The Farmacy at 44th and Spruce Streets in West Philadelphia counts his blessings.

"I think I'm the only chef/owner who works four days a week and makes a good living," he says, citing weekend brunches as his farm-forward restaurant's bread-and-butter. "I can't stand it anymore."

But what about dinnertime? And earlier in the week? Crickets.

He and his kitchen staff have long been noodling around with sandwiches, using their downtime to create.

"Where around here can I find a good, hand-breaded chicken sandwich?" Scofield said he asked constantly. Plenty of local spots will take a breaded cutlet out of the freezer, drop it into the fryer, slap a slice of cheese on it, add a squirt of sauce, and call it chicken Parm, "but it's not an actual chicken Parm sandwich."

Scofield and partner/girlfriend Danielle Coulter are adding a sandwich menu to complement their regular Rx The Farmacy menu from noon to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday. (But not Sundays, because brunch is too intense.)

They call this new approach FarmGang Sandwich Co. Sandwiches are available in the dining room, as well as for takeout and delivery.

"FarmGang" came from a cook. "He listened to terrible rap all the time," Scofield said. "He called us that and it stuck."

Should the FarmGang approach take off, Scofield said he would not be averse to changing over the entire menu.
