Open, closed: Opa is back after flood; Gin & Pop is shuttered

Opa, the Greek-theme bar-restaurant at 1311 Sansom St., reopened late last week, three months after a water-main break turned the streets in the neighborhood into rushing rivers and flooded basements.

It's believed to be the final business to return, though the adjacent blocks of Sansom and Juniper Streets remain closed to traffic.

Opa owner George Tsiouris said electrical and refrigeration equipment in the basement was destroyed. He used the shutdown to touch up the interior.

Meanwhile: Gin & Pop, part of the revitalization of Francisville, closed Sunday, Oct. 7, exactly one year after it opened at the crossroads of 19th, Ginnodo, and Poplar Streets. (GINnodo & POPlar, in other words.)

On Saturday, the bar announced the end on Instagram:

"Due to unforeseen circumstances, tonight will be our final dinner service. (Yea, we don't like it either)… Come by tonight and give us a proper send off! We'll be open for the Eagles game tomorrow with free food and lots of specials. Bring some cash if you want to get some ridiculously good beers for cheap to take home. Thank you for all the support over the past year! It's been a great run and we will miss you all very much!"

In a text message Monday, co-owner Kris Kwiatkowski said he and his brother Tom have been looking for an "investor/buyer who may keep it going; however the restaurant and building are currently for sale." The listing, including the restaurant/bar and two apartments, is for $850,000. He said the reasons for the closing are "a bit complicated and a combination of several factors."

Chef Josh Noh left several months ago, and is now chef de cuisine at Spice Finch, the Mediterranean newcomer at the Warwick that coincidentally picked up a three-bell Craig LaBan review over the weekend.
