Friends and family of Sheila Modglin — the popular bartender at Center City dive bar Dirty Frank's who was critically injured when she was struck by a car in February — are rallying to raise money for her medical expenses.

Dining Out for Sheila will span October, and businesses are being asked to host events or promotions. Dirty Frank's, Stogie Joe's, the Black Cat Tavern, and Grace Tavern were the first to sign on.

"Basically, we are asking restaurants to choose a night, or a few nights, and donate a percentage of profit," said Sarah Eisenstein, who met Modglin nearly 30 years ago and later worked alongside her at Dirty Frank's, 13th and Pine Streets. "I'd would go in and stay for hours," Eisenstein said. "She's that person you want to hang out with."

Modglin also founded the art-for-kids program Sunshine Arts in Upper Darby, where she opened her doors to neighborhood children.

Modglin has been shuttled between hospitals and rehab centers since early Feb. 9, when she was struck while crossing Lincoln Drive. She suffered brain injuries as well as a broken pelvis and legs. She has no health insurance, Eisenstein said, adding that recovery could take years.
