Thursday

Space, man It's called the Fermi Paradox: Though probability suggests it's highly likely that there are extraterrestrial civilizations and that they would be apparent to us, we've seen and heard nothing. As the physicist Enrico Fermi put it when he came up with his paradox in 1950: "Where are they?" It's possible that we're alone. Or that we're the first. Or that any civilizations capable of technology destroyed themselves before achieving interstellar ability (uh-oh). Well, if we're not alone, let's hope contact is something like Steven Spielberg's 1977 sci-fi masterpiece, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, in which the UFO denizens give us a glimpse of themselves (with music). The film screens at 7 p.m. at the Ambler Theater, 108 E. Butler Ave., Ambler. Tickets are $10.50.

Call 215-345-7855.

Friday & Saturday

Punk contrarians The Mekons began as a band of art students in 1977, formed in the same University of Leeds scene that spawned the Gang of Four and Delta 5. Over the decades, they have pioneered the alt-country sound, collaborated with landscape artist Vito Acconci and experimental novelist Kathy Acker, and had spectacularly bad luck with recording companies while achieving critical acclaim. Joe Angio's 2013 documentary, Revenge of the Mekons, telling the group's story, screens at International House, 3701 Chestnut St., at 7 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $9;

$7 seniors and students. Call 215-387-5125.

World beat Honduran singer, guitarist, and percussionist Aurelio brings the sound of Central America's Garifuna tradition to a double bill with the Brazilian choro group Regional de NY for a Blue Curtain concert at Pettoranello Gardens, Princeton Community Park North, Mountain Avenue and Route 206, Princeton, at 7 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. Call 609-619-0003.
