A Temple University student is in critical condition after he was shot early Saturday during an attempted robbery just off campus, police said.
A witness told investigators that he and the victim, 19, were standing outside on the 1500 block of North 17th Street shortly before 1 a.m., when an unknown man walked up and said, "give me everything you got."
The suspect pulled up his shirt, revealing a semiautomatic handgun tucked in his waistband, police said.
The 19-year-old student suddenly charged at the man, who pulled out the gun and shot the teen once in his left hip, according to the witness' account to investigators.
Officers rushed the student to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he was placed in critical condition.
The witness told police nothing was taken during the crime.
The suspect is described as a thin, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-9-inch tall black male between the ages of 35 and 40. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a red hooded sweatshirt and a red beanie, according to police and an alert issued by the university.
No arrests had yet been reported Saturday morning. The identity of the hospitalized student was not immediately released.
