Penn professor will appeal sentence in sexual assault
A former University of Pennsylvania professor plans to appeal a ruling that sent him to prison for sexually assaulting a Penn graduate student in 2002.
Tracy McIntosh, 54, a prominent brain-trauma researcher, is serving a 31/2- to 7-year prison term. He denies raping the victim, the niece of a friend. The victim was 23 at the time of the attack, which happened inside his office at Penn.
McIntosh, of Media, was sentenced to prison last month after prosecutors challenged an earlier house-arrest sentence. At the time, he tried to withdraw his no-contest plea, but then read a 15-minute apology to the victim, her family, his family and friends and the Penn community. He said he has had a rebirth since the assault.
Until he pleaded no contest to the felony sexual assault and marijuana possession charges, McIntosh was head of Penn's Head Injury Research Center. McIntosh must cite the specific grounds for his appeal by early April.
