3 dead, 2 officers hurt in shootings
A former law enforcement officer who had lost his job because of allegations of domestic violence shot his ex-wife to death and wounded a sheriff and deputy, authorities said. Anthony Giaquinta, 41, fatally shot his ex-wife, Kathy Giaquinta Smith, at the home in Clarkesville, Ga., Russell Andrews of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation told reporters Monday. The body of Steven Thomas Singleton, 45, was found outside the home, and authorities believe Giaquinta shot him as well.
Giaquinta fled but was found dead outside the home. Authorities believe he died from a gunshot wound suffered in an exchange of shots with a sheriff's deputy, Andrews said.
Giaquinta had worked for the Gainesville Police Department and the Habersham County Sheriff's Office, where he was a dog handler. He was fired from the Habersham job in 2013, after allegations of domestic violence surfaced. - AP

A final salute
A beloved K9 suffering from seizures and arthritis received a final salute and a police escort, with lights flashing, to the vet clinic where he was euthanized. Dozens of officers and firefighters turned out this month to pay their respects to Sultan, a 13-year-old German shepherd who sniffed out drugs and bad guys with the Yarmouth Police Department. Officers gave a last pat or scratch to the dog before the escort. Officer Shane Stephenson said Monday that he took Sultan into his home as a pet when the dog retired from police work at age 10. He said Sultan was friendly and lovable. "But when it came down to business, he was one of the best, too." - AP
