Gerald "Jerry" A. Doyle 3d, 83, of Newtown, Bucks County, a company owner and cartoonist, died of kidney failure Wednesday at St. Mary Medical Center in Middletown Township.

Mr. Doyle grew up in Melrose Park watching his father, Jerry, draw President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his cronies. Gerald Doyle Jr.'s syndicated political cartoons appeared in the Philadelphia Record and later in the Philadelphia Daily News.
It appeared for a time that Mr. Doyle would follow his father's career path. At 12, he began drawing political cartoons for the Manor Flash, a newspaper in West Philadelphia, and his work was exhibited on the Steel Pier in Atlantic City. Mr. Doyle decided not to become a political cartoonist, though, said his sister, Peg Lawlor, because he knew how hard his father worked, often getting up in the middle of the night to change a drawing or get an idea on paper.
After graduating from Cheltenham High School, Mr. Doyle joined the Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific during World War II.
For years he was a salesman for printing companies. In the 1960s he established Fleet Aid, a manufacturer's representative for truck parts in Newtown. A licensed pilot, he sometimes flew to business meetings in a friend's plane. He retired in the late 1990s.
Mr. Doyle continued to draw cartoons for family and friends and for charity benefits. He never liked blank paper, said his wife, Carolyn Spaulding Doyle, and would doodle on every envelope he mailed. He was also an accomplished metal sculptor, ceramicist and stained-glass artist.
Mr. Doyle was a member of the American Legion post in Newtown and the Moose lodge in Doylestown.
In addition to his wife and sister, he is survived by a son, Steven; a grandson; and four stepchildren; and a Terry. A son, Gerald IV, died in 2007. His former wife, Elaine Doyle, died in 2005.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at Fluehr Funeral Home, 800 Newtown-Richboro Rd., Richboro. A Funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Olde Church of St. Andrew, 123 S. Sycamore St., Newtown.
