Haverford's Stevenson hurls a perfect game

In the second game of a doubleheader, Haverford's Brittany Stevenson tossed the first perfect game in program history in a 10-0 softball victory over Gwynedd-Mercy on Thursday, helping the Fords complete a sweep of the visiting Griffins.

Stevenson (5-6) faced just 15 batters in the five-inning contest as she struck out six and walked none. She also got her first hit of the season, leading off the fourth with a double and then scoring on a single by Lauren Touey (Shipley School).

Jill Schnall (Conestoga) capped the scoring in the fifth with a three-run homer, the first of her college career.

The Fords rolled past the Griffins, 7-0, in the first game as Claire Fitzgerald (6-4) struck out 10 and scattered three hits.

La Salle's White leaving. La Salle forward Devon White (Strawberry Mansion) will graduate in May and will not use his final season of eligibility, Explorers men's basketball head coach John Giannini announced Thursday.

"We tell our student-athletes that their primary goal is to graduate and to expand their options for life after basketball," Giannini said. "Devon has worked very hard to graduate on time and I am very proud of his accomplishment."

White averaged 5.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game this season for the Explorers.

Bergjans stars for Haverford. A stellar outing from pitcher Tommy Bergjans led Haverford to an 8-2 win over host Muhlenberg in Allentown, Pa.

Bergjans (3-2) earned the complete-game win by scattering five hits and allowing one walk while striking out 15, surpassing the single-game program mark of 11 Ks set by Travis Zier in a win over visiting Ursinus on April 10, 2007.

The Ford (13-11, 5-1 Centennial Conference) broke open a 1-0 game with six runs in the top of the third inning.

Jeremy Zoll's single up the middle off Mules starter Christian Ferlan plated Nick Miranda for the first run in the big inning. Jake Chaplin, who had walked following Miranda's lead-off single and stolen base, scored on Bobby Hubley's double down the left-field line. Zoll and Hubley added two more runs on a single through the left side by Matt Liscovitz. Mike Tentilucci (Council Rock North) hit triple to the gap in left-center to score Liscovitz, and then Tentilucci came home on Ferlan's wild pitch.

The seven-run lead was more than enough for Bergjans, who had a no-hitter through the first five innings.

The Mules (18-10, 2-4) scratched out two runs in the sixth, but the Fords added one more more run in the seventh on Zoll's RBI single.

Explorers fall. Eric Van Wyk (Garnet Valley) allowed two earned runs over seven innings while walking none, but Massachusetts (7-10, 3-1 A-10) scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to win, 2-1, in Amherst, Mass. La Salle (15-14, 3-4 A-10) stranded 13 runners in the loss. Van Wyk (3-3) scattered nine hits and struck out five.

Fords women's lacrosse win. Megan Gallagher scored five as Haverford thumped host Bryn Mawr, 17-5.
