The Union have come to an agreement in principle with midfielder Maurice Edu of Stoke City of the English Premier League, pending league approval, according to a team source.

Technically, the deal isn't complete until Major League Soccer signs off on it. Goal.com first reported the agreement.

The 27-year-old Edu is a U.S. National Team veteran and a former MLS rookie of the year with Toronto FC.

It was believed that both sides had an earlier deal that MLS wouldn't approve because the league felt the salary was too high. Estimates were $1.2 million a year, but MLS commissioner Don Garber said that figure "was on the low side." Either way, Edu is apparently coming to the Union, who have had a flurry of recent activity to reshape their team.

In another move, the Union agreed in principle to loan defender Carlos Valdes to San Lorenzo of Argentina. Valdes was on loan to Santa Fe in his native Colombia last season.
