As U.S. women’s soccer team manager Emma Hayes indicated might happen, star centerback Naomi Girma was withdrawn from the squad for the upcoming series against Spain because of an injury suffered in practice with her club, England’s Chelsea, a few days ago.

Kate Del Fava of the Utah Royals was called up from the under-23 squad as a replacement.

Spain midfielder Mariona Caldentey will also miss the series after suffering a hamstring injury in a game with her club, England’s Arsenal, on Sunday morning against Manchester City.

That game featured two other Americans who are on the U.S. squad, City midfielder Sam Coffey and Arsenal defender Emily Fox. Coffey’s side won, 4-2, to extend its first-place record to 5-0-0.
