Sixers fans not happy after VJ Edgecombe called for taunting

After sinking a breakaway layup, VJ Edgecombe started staring down his defender, Jalen Suggs, and later got tangled up with him underneath the basket.

Both teams got into it heading into the timeout, and had to be separated by the officials. Edgecombe and Kelly Oubre Jr. both started hyping up the crowd on their way to the bench.

Edgecombe was ultimately called for a technical taunting foul. Jalen Suggs was awarded one free throw and the Magic got the ball.

VJ Edgecombe putting on a show

There's still a half of basketball to be played but we might have the highlight of VJ Edgecombe's playoff debut.

The rookie caught the ball in transition, took a bump from Orlando's Jalen Suggs and pulled off a nifty spin and and-one finish. His teammates were just as excited as the fans in Xfinity Mobile Arena, shaking Edgecombe's hand and giving him playful pushes as he walked past the bench. A nice Justin Edwards meme came from it too as he bulged his eyes in response.

The finish gave the Sixers a 56-53 lead right before halftime. They entered the intermission leading, 59-55.

Sixers take 59-55 first-half lead over Magic

Kelly Oubre Jr. sparked the Sixers in the first quarter with three three-pointers, opening the game, and Tyrese Maxey was the Sixers’ best offensive player in the first half, scoring 16 points with 5 assists.

Oubre and Paul George each scored 11 and VJ Edgecombe was all over the floor with six points, five rebounds, and one assist.

Rebounding has been a struggle for this Sixers team, but In the first quarter, the Sixers scored 10 second chance points off just four offensive rebounds. Adem Bona started the game, but Andre Drummond was a quick substitution in the first quarter, and played the lion’s share of the minutes.

Things getting chippy early

One key to the 76ers' success against Orlando is keeping Paolo Banchero in check. So it should be no surprise that there was a little early tension between the Magic's star forward and a few Sixers.

The back and forth started when crew chief Tony Brothers called a foul on George that sent Banchero to the line. On the very next play, a foul was called against the Sixers. But it let to jawing between Banchero and Kelly Oubre Jr., who were both assessed technical fouls.

This will be a matchup to watch all night as the Sixers throw multiple forwards at Banchero on the wing to try to slow him down.

Maxey debuts signature shoe vs. Orlando

All eyes will be on Tyrese Maxey tonight as the Sixers face the Orlando Magic for a spot in the playoffs. There will be plenty of eyes on his shoes, too, as he debuts his New Balance Maxey V1 signature shoe during the play-in game.

Maxey, who signed a signature shoe deal with New Balance in 2023, will wear the low top sneakers that have a black base with suede and mesh material, light blue accents that swoop into the design, a white collar lining, black midsole, white shoelaces, and a blue New Balance logo on the back of the shoe.

The signature shoe has been in the works since January, but the brand did not release details then about when the shoe would debut.

Flyers in the house to ring the bell

With the Flyers and Sixers both ready to play postseason games in South Philadelphia for the first time since 2018, it’s time for a little inter-team collaboration.

Flyers rookies Denver Barkey and Porter Martone rang the bell for the Sixers ahead of Wednesday’s Play-In Tournament matchup over Orlando, with fellow rookie Alex Bump also in attendance.

The Flyers are set to start their own playoff series this weekend over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Franz Wagner will be tonight's X-factor

The Sixers’ chances against the Magic tonight hinge largely on Franz Wagner.

Will he be Franz Wagner? Or will he be the guy we’ve seen since returning from a serious ankle injury that cost him most of the regular season?

A lot has been made about Wagner’s minutes restriction, which has limited him to 20-25 minutes per game since returning to the lineup late last month. More important to the Sixers’ fate is what Wagner is capable of doing in those minutes.

Joel Embiid surprises teammates in the locker room

The pregame open locker room period got an unexpected visitor: Joel Embiid.

Embiid walked in around 6:30 p.m. with Sixers rookie VJ Edgecombe, then received a parade of greetings from teammates clearly seeing the big man for the first time since his appendectomy last week.

All-Star point guard Tyrese Maxey, who is Embiid's longest-tenured current teammate, gasped upon seeing Embiid and then gave him a gentle hug. Embiid also showed off the scar on his stomach to Maxey and Trendon Watford.

It's up to 'VJ Maxx' now

Inside the visitors’ locker room in Washington earlier this month, VJ Edgecombe slid over to join Tyrese Maxey for a joint postgame interview.

Six minutes of banter, inside jokes, and genuine comments ensued between the 76ers guards. Maxey scanned a box score from the Sixers’ dominant victory over the Wizards and asked Edgecombe, with pseudo-exasperation, “Bro, you only had one defensive rebound? How is that possible?” Edgecombe interjected during a Maxey answer about teammates who had scored 30 points off the bench this season because the veteran had forgotten Justin Edwards and former Sixer Cameron Payne. And Maxey dropped that Edgecombe had started calling himself “PG1,” because he had 10 assists that night.

“Just trying to make life easier for my dog right here,” Edgecombe said of Maxey. “They be hounding him. Guarding him full-court. Face guarding him. Doing all type of things. They trying their best to stop him, and they can’t, really.”

New Sixers and Flyers arena will sit on former Spectrum site

Comcast Spectacor and the Philadelphia 76ers have decided on a precise location in the South Philadelphia sports complex for their new arena, which will also host the Flyers and an as-yet unnamed WNBA team.

The new stadium will be located at the southeast corner of the intersection of Broad Street and Pattison Avenue, right next to SEPTA’s Broad Street Line, which serves the sports complex.

The location echoes the Sixers and Flyers’ original home, the Spectrum, as will the ultimate — and still unrevealed — design.

NBA looking into incident involving LaMelo Ball, who could miss Friday's play-in game

If the 76ers fail to defeat the Orlando Magic in their first Play-In Tournament game, they will have one final shot to win and enter the NBA playoffs.

The Charlotte Hornets, the winner of the matchup between the East's No. 9 and 10 seeds, will be waiting there. But there's a chance they could be without one of their stars.

LaMelo Ball might is in jeopardy of missing the game as the NBA reviews him for taking out the ankle of Miami Heat star Bam Adebayo, who had to go to the locker room and did not return.

NBA announces refs, including controversial veteran Tony Brothers

The NBA announced officials for tonight's NBA Play-In Tournament game between the Sixers and Magic.

The list includes crew chief Tony Brothers, referee Tyler Ford, umpire Andy Nagy, and alternate Jason Goldenberg.

Most of the names are pretty benign, but Bothers, a 32-year veteran, drew a bit of attention from reporters and fans. Some even suggested that his participation in the game guaranteed a loss for the Sixers. The team is 0-2 in games officiated by Brothers this season, but is nearly .500 (65-67) over his career.

Adem Bona isn't going to let the Magic push him around

With Joel Embiid still sidelined following his appendectomy, second-year big man Adem Bona is in line for significant minutes in his postseason debut.

Bona and veteran Andre Drummond have both started games, come off the bench, and slipped completely out of the rotation at times this season. That occurred even in the Sixers’ regular-season finale against the "tanking" Milwaukee Bucks, when Bona started the game but Drummond began the second half.

“I’ve been zeroing in on the opportunity that I have in front of me,” Bona said following Wednesday’s shootaround. “… With Joel being out, it’s a next-man-[up] mentality. We’re going to try to fill the void he’s left as much as possible.”

Sixers are slight favorites over Magic

At FanDuel, the Sixers are 1.5-point favorites for Wednesday night’s game and are -120 on the moneyline, while Orlando is +102. The total is set at 222.5. Meanwhile, it’s pretty similar at DraftKings, where the Sixers (-118) are also giving a point and a half to the Magic (-102) and the point total is set one point lower at 221.5. But at BetMGM, the Sixers are 2.5-point favorites with a 222.5 total and are -125 on the moneyline.

A healthy and happy Paul George has entered the chat

It’s not often that a 25-game suspension actually heightens a player’s popularity with fans.

Initially, the news of Paul George’s suspension for taking “improper medication” was met with derision by 76ers faithful, especially after injuries sidelined the star forward for much of 2024-25 and led to one of the worst seasons of his stellar career.

When he returned to the lineup against the Chicago Bulls on March 25, George missed eight of his first 10 shots and entered the locker room at halftime with just five points. But he went on a tear in the second half, earning massive cheers from the crowd after hitting three consecutive shots.

Sixers playoff scenarios heading into tonight's play-in game

As far as postseason math goes, the No. 7 seed Sixers' path to the NBA playoffs is simple – win tonight against the No. 8 seed Orlando Magic and they're in.

Here are the different scenarios the Sixers face heading into tonight's play-in game:

If the Sixers win tonight, they would advance to the playoffs after a one-year absence and face the No. 2 seed Boston Celtics in the first round. Game 1 would be Sunday at 1 p.m. on ABC.

Tonight's Sixers play-in game on Amazon, which had technical difficulties last night

The 76ers face off against the Orlando Magic Wednesday night with a playoff spot on the line, but fans in Philadelphia or anywhere else won't find the game on television.

Instead, Sixers fans will need to log onto Amazon Prime Video to stream tonight’s play-in game, which is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Hopefully things will go better than last night, where Amazon's stream of the Hornets-Heat play-in game went offline for nearly two minutes in overtime.

It’s the first year of the NBA’s new 11-year broadcast deal, meaning the play-in games move from ESPN to Amazon. On the call will be Michael Grady and Brent Barry, with Kristina Pink reporting from Xfinity Mobile Arena.

Sixers playoff predictions: Will they make it out of the Play-In Tournament?

With Joel Embiid unavailable and the odds stacked against them, the 76ers will enter these NBA playoffs in a familiar position. How do those on The Inquirer’s Sixers beat expect Tyrese Maxey and Co. to fare? Will they make it out of the Play-In Tournament? Can they steal a series? Could they advance further?

Here's what Gina Mizell, our Sixers beat writer, had to say:

Will the Sixers make it out of the play-in?

Joel Embiid hasn't been around

Joel Embiid has not been around the 76ers “at all” since his appendectomy last week, coach Nick Nurse said Tuesday.

“He’s still in recovery,” Nurse said following the Sixers’ practice before Wednesday’s NBA Play-In Tournament game against the Orlando Magic. “But spirits are pretty good.”

Embiid was diagnosed with appendicitis Thursday and had surgery later that day in Houston. He was discharged from the hospital and traveled back to Philadelphia on Friday.

Hornets beat the Heat on Miles Bridges' last-second block

LaMelo Ball made a layup with 4.7 seconds left in overtime, Miles Bridges blocked Davion Mitchell’s attempt at a winning layup at the buzzer, and the Charlotte Hornets beat Miami 127-126 in a wild start to the NBA’s play-in games, eliminating the Heat from the playoffs on Tuesday night.

Ball finished with 30 points and 10 assists and Bridges had 28 points and nine rebounds as the Hornets won their first postseason home game in a decade. Coby White had 19 points, including a turnaround 3 with 10.8 second left in regulation to send the game to OT.

Mitchell scored 28 points and Andrew Wiggins added 27 for the Heat, who lost Bam Adebayo to a lower back injury when Ball tripped him in the second quarter.
