A 72-year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run in South Philadelphia

A 72-year-old woman was killed by a driver, who ignored a red light, on Monday night, at Broad Street and Oregon Avenue in South Philadelphia.

A driver sped through a red light in South Philadelphia on Monday night, striking a 72-year-old woman and killing her. The driver then fled the scene.

The Philadelphia Police Department is looking for a suspect in the hit-and-run that occurred around 11 p.m. at Broad Street and Oregon Avenue.

Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told reporters that witnesses and surveillance cameras saw the 72-year-old woman get hit by a vehicle as she headed southbound across Oregon Avenue. Police believe the driver was traveling at high speed when they ignored the red light.

“It struck her with such force that she was knocked out of her sneakers and she was launched westbound approximately 100 feet,” Small said.

First responders found the woman lying in the street on Oregon Avenue, suffering injuries to her face, head, and body, according to police. Small said she was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead at around 11:48 p.m.

Investigators later found broken car parts along Oregon Avenue, where the hit-and-run driver had previously fled westbound on Oregon Avenue.

Tuesday morning, police said they believe they found an SUV they believe was involved in the fatal crash on Monday night, located at Whitaker and Hunting Park avenues in Northeast Philadelphia.

No arrests have been made, and police have not shared information about a suspect at the time of publishing.
