Seven months into Trump’s administration, Latinos in Hazleton who voted for the president are wrestling with their choice in the face of an aggressive crackdown on immigration.
They overwhelmingly object to the deportation or arrests of hardworking, noncriminal, undocumented immigrants, but many still largely back the president.
What polls say: Trump won every ward last year in Hazleton, a city that is 63% Hispanic. National polls now show eroding Latino support for Trump and the Republican Party.
Growing frustration: People’s misgivings about Trump’s immigration policies have been building. Even fervent supporters admit they are grappling with headlines about ICE deporting noncriminals and separating families.
At odds: Many are wary of speaking against the party in power, but some say they made a mistake, while others try to be optimistic and believe that Trump only wants to target criminals.
