After repeatedly running over a woman with his car on the streets of Olney Sunday night, Joel Horton went to the trunk of his 2012 Nissan Maxima, got a shovel and continued to beat the already broken woman to death, police said.

Horton, 50, of the 3800 block of North Gratz Street in Nicetown, was taken into custody at the scene and charged with murder and related offenses. The victim has been identified by authorities as Adrienne Lindsay, 52, of the 2100 block of North 23rd Street in North Philadelphia.

Police responded to the 700 block of West Louden Street around 8:24 p.m. Sunday for reports of a person screaming.  When they arrived, officers found Lindsay underneath of Horton's car with Horton standing over her, police said.

Police said their investigation revealed that Horton had run over Lindsay multiple times with his car and then beat her with the shovel. It was unclear whether the victim was still alive when she was allegedly beaten with the shovel.

Along with a single count of murder, Horton was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, and two counts of possessing instruments of a crime, according to court records.
