Eagles penalties and playing time
Here's a breakdown of the Eagles' penalties and personnel packages through the first two weeks of the season.
Time to round up some things I didn't get to earlier in the week.
Here are notes on Eagles penalties and personnel as the Birds prepare to take on the Jaguars Sunday afternoon.
Let's start with the penalty rundown. The Eagles were called for nine penalties for 75 yards last week against the Lions. Through two weeks, they are fifth in the NFL with 19 penalties and fourth with 155 penalty yards. Here's how it breaks down on offense, defense and special teams:
Offense: 9 penalties for 65 yards
Defense: 5 penalties for 30 yards
Special teams: 5 penalties for 60 yards
Against Detroit, the Birds had four penalties for 45 yards on special teams. Three of those were called on rookie Kurt Coleman. Here's the individual penalty total through two weeks:
| Player | No. of penalties | Penalty yards |
| Kurt Coleman | 3 | 40 |
| Stewart Bradley | 2 | 15 |
| Jason Peters | 2 | 15 |
| Eldra Buckley | 1 | 15 |
| Winston Justice | 1 | 10 |
| Brent Celek | 1 | 10 |
| Clay Harbor | 1 | 10 |
| Trent Cole | 1 | 5 |
| Antwan Barnes | 1 | 5 |
| Dimitri Patterson | 1 | 5 |
| Michael Vick | 1 | 5 |
| Nick Cole | 1 | 5 |
| Antonio Dixon | 1 | 5 |
Offensive and defensive personnel
The one personnel package the Eagles used significantly more in Week 2 than in Week 1 was the 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE set. The RB joining LeSean McCoy in the backfield was either Mike Bell or Owen Schmitt.
Through two weeks, the Birds' most popular offensive personnel package is 1 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE. Here's a breakdown:
| Personnel package | Pct. used |
| 1 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE | 41.1% |
| 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE | 22.6% |
| 1 RB, 4 WR | 10.5% |
| 1 RB, 2 WR, 2 TE | 10.5% |
| 2 RB, 3 WR | 10.5% |
| 4 WR, 1 TE | 4.0% |
| 2 RB, 1 WR, 2 TE | 0.8% |
The offense has four receivers on 14.5 percent of its plays. That means more Riley Cooper. And two tight ends on 11.3 percent of its plays - will that mean more Garrett Mills? Or more Clay Harbor? My guess is Mills.
Defensively, the rotation along the line continues. Here's a breakdown of how often each guy has been on the field:
| Player | Percentage of overall defensive snaps |
| Trent Cole | 93% |
| Brandon Graham | 70% |
| Mike Patterson | 51% |
| Trevor Laws | 47% |
| Brodrick Bunkley | 44% |
| Antwan Barnes | 39% |
| Juqua Parker | 38% |
| Antonio Dixon | 21% |
Keep in mind that Graham left the game in the second half, or his percentage would likely be even higher. As I mentioned yesterday, it'll be interesting to see if Parker gets more playing time, considering how well he's playing.
