You voted and the most irritating Christmas song is ...
It wasn't ever out of the top spot: Paul McCartney's (Simply Having A) Wonderful Christmastime, which many of you felt possessed all the musical charm of a grade schooler learning to play the recorder.
About 3,300 voters entered the poll. It's interesting to note that respondents didn't seem to like songs that feature poor music or grating animal sounds (Barking Dogs Jingle Bells got a few write-in votes). And, some poll takers were obviously just reacting to songs that are played in heavy rotation, year after year. But, if we can extrapolate from the data, respondents seem to prefer songs that are more overtly religious or pious - or at least they didn't seem to find them irritating enough to enter them as write-in candidates.
In fact, we had enough write-ins to come up with three songs we didn't include in our original choices. Last Christmas by Wham!, Santa Claus is Coming to Town by Bruce Springsteen and Feliz Navidad by Jose Feliciano bear mentioning.
So here are the top five most irritating songs, by percentage of votes received.
5.) The Christmas Shoes by NewSong, 10% of vote
4.) Dominick the Donkey by Lou Monte, 11% of vote
3.) All I Want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey, 12% of vote.
2.) Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer by Elmo & Patsy, 14% of vote.
1.) Wonderful Christmastime by Paul McCartney, 17 % of vote.
And finally, we leave you with Stephen Colbert's new Christmas song that he believes is worse than Wonderful Christmastime
