Ed Marynowitz move gives Chip Kelly absolute power with Eagles

Chip Kelly's four-week search for a personnel lieutenant is over. After interviewing at least three outside candidates, the Eagles coach has decided to promote Ed Marynowitz to the new position of vice-president of player personnel.

Marynowitz, 30, had been the team's assistant director of player personnel under former general manager Howie Roseman. Roseman was demoted earlier this month after firing the team's director of player personnel, Tom Gamble and losing a power struggle to Kelly.

Kelly now has absolute power over personnel decisions. Marynowitz will be his top scouting advisor.

"Ed is someone who has really impressed me going back to my interview process with the Eagles two years ago,'' Kelly said in a statement released by the team. "He's very bright, detailed, organized and his vision was aligned with what we want to accomplish. I spoke with a lot of people outside of our organization over the past few weeks, and in the end, Ed was the most impressive.''

Kelly had interviewed at least three other people: Scott Fitterer, Seattle's director of college scouting; Chris Polian, Jacksonville's director of pro personnel and a former general manager with Indianapolis; and Chris Grier, Miami's director of college scouting. He also was denied permission to speak with at least two other candidates, Chris Ballard and Jon Robinson, who are personnel executives with Kansas City and Tampa Bay respectively.

Before joining the Eagles' scouting department in 2012, Marynowitz spent four years working for Nick Saban at the University of Alabama as the football program's director of player personnel.

Marynowitz is a native of Media. He spent two years as a starting quarterback at LaSalle. He finished his playing career as a backup at the University of Central Florida in 2005.

"This is a great opportunity for Ed, and I think Philadelphia made an excellent decision in terms of expanding his role and responsibilities in the organization,'' Saban said.

Kelly is one of just four coaches in the league who will have complete control of personnel. Two of the other three are playing in the Super Bowl – Seattle's Pete Carroll and New England's Bill Belichick. The other coach/king is the Saints' Sean Payton.
