Aglianico from Campania is one of my favorite wines for fall, with bold red fruit and a rustic edge that lends itself to big casual gatherings where flavors come from the grill, the pasta bowl, or a pizza pie. Pennsylvania has brought in a great 2006 example from Rocca dei Sanniti, a winery new to the United States, and on 30 percent discount at $13.99.
True to the grape, which originated in Greece but is now one of southern Italy's favorite reds, this wine from the slopes of Mount Taburno has a dark ruby color with lush red berries on the nose to balance savory edges that can be leathery and herbaceous.
A younger vintage (2008) from well-regarded Mastroberardino ($15.99, code 32272) is also worth trying. A juicy white Fiano di Avellino, meanwhile, also from Rocca dei Sanniti for $13.99 (code 32233), is another fantastic fall wine set to hit state stores by the end of September.
