Where do all those marathoners come from?

The Gore-Tex Philadelphia Marathon has become a mega event for the city, drawing runners from around the world - quite a feat considering its humble roots in 1994 when 1,100 showed to run.

As of this week, 31,608 people were registered to run the full marathon, half marathon, or Rothman Institute 8k and Kids Fun Run. Of those, 15,508 were registered to run the full 26.2 miles, according to data supplied by the marathon staff and analyzed by Philly.com.

Runners come from cities spanning the globe including Beijing, Tokyo, Marrakech, London, Copenhagen and Dublin, with high concentrations from cities in Mexico and England.

But, no surprise, they come in highest concentrations from Philadelphia, its suburbs, and South Jersey.  But, perhaps a bit surprisingly, many come from the neighborhood where the race starts at 22nd and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
