Two Philadelphia police officers were injured and the suspect killed in a shootout that erupted during a traffic stop Friday night in West Philadelphia, police said.
Officer Adam O'Donnell was shot in the chest at about 8 p.m., during the incident in the Cobbs Creek section, and was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. For a time, he was listed in stable condition but after treatment, was released from the hospital.
O'Donnell's partner, Ivan Centeno, was grazed by a bullet and he was also released.
The two officers reportedly saw a green minivan run a red light at 57th Street and Spruce Street, but when they attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver refused to pull over, police said.
The driver led them on a chase before coming to a stop near the intersection of Walnut Street and South Frazier Street, police said. The officers approached the vehicle from both sides and the suspect inside the van began shooting. The officers returned fire and the suspect was killed, police said.
Investigators did not release the identity of the shooter.
The green minivan remained abandoned along Walnut late Friday. Crime scene investigators surrounded the scene. Other officers gathered at the hospital awaiting news on their injured colleague.
"The suspect, without any warning, opened fire and struck O'Donnell in the stomach," Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey said on Fox29 news. "Fortunately, he was wearing his bulletproof vest."
Ramsey and Mayor Nutter visited the officers at the hospital.
"This has got to stop," Nutter said. "Attacks on the citizen and on the Philadelphia Police Department are our number one priority in increasing safety in the city."
