HARRISBURG - Tom Corbett took the oath as the 46th governor of Pennsylvania at noon today, summoning the spirit of the state's founder William Penn to describe his plan to "chart a new course" of limited government, restored integrity and fiscal discipline.
Under threatening skies and an icy chill, Corbett, with his wife Susan and two children by his side, placed his left hand on a palm-sized Bible printed in 1698 that belonged to Penn. The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice Ronald Castille.
The outdoor ceremony at the state Capitol was attended by more than 1,000 people, among them former governors Dick Thornburgh, Tom Ridge, Mark Schweiker and Ed Rendell, whose second and final term in office ended as Corbett's began.
While acknowledging the "pending storm" of the state budget deficit, Corbett promised a new era of civility and stressed innovation, creativity and courage to "advance the promise of Commonwealth."
"I have great faith we will unleash a new common prosperity to benefit all Pennsylvanians," he said.
