A swift-moving fire raced through a two-story rowhouse is South Philadelphia late last night, killing one man and sending two others to the hospital.

Fire dispatch records show crews were called at 11:33 p.m. Sunday to the residence on the 1200 block of South 46th Street. The fire was under control quickly - by midnight - but the damage was done.

Fire officials confirmed the death, but were not yet releasing an identity as of early this morning.

When fire crews first arrived, heavy smoke was coming from the second floor.

Two males were taken from the home to the nearby Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. They were reportedly suffering from smoke inhalation and burns.

Philadelphia Fire Department Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said crews found no working smoke alarms, that some utilities appeared to to be working, and that residents were using space heaters.

Check back for details as they develop.
