Author arraigned in campaign-fund case
A Republican candidate told government investigators that conservative scholar and author Dinesh D'Souza lied to her about the source of donations made to her 2012 Senate campaign, a prosecutor said at an arraignment Friday.
The candidate, Wendy Long, made the statement to investigators as they were building a case against D'Souza, 52, who made the documentary 2016: Obama's America, Assistant U.S. Attorney Carrie Cohen said. Long lost to incumbent Kirsten Gillibrand (D., N.Y.).
The prosecutor said D'Souza was indicted after he directed a person who worked for him and another who lived with him to each make $10,000 in donations to Long's campaign with the understanding that he would reimburse them, which he did.
D'Souza pleaded not guilty Friday to charges he violated campaign-finance laws. He was freed on $500,000 bond. - AP
