Rutgers is launching a $500 million capital construction program, the school said yesterday.

The projects include $12 million in renovations for the recreation center at the Camden campus and $55 million for a facility on protein research in Piscataway. In all, more than 20 building projects are expected to be completed.

The school will borrow $233 million to help pay for the construction. Rutgers estimates the projects will help create 5,000 jobs through 2011.

"The projects that are part of this initiative will enhance services and academic opportunities for Rutgers students while benefiting the regional economy," school president Richard L. McCormick said in a statement.
