James Uibel, 54, of Collingswood, a former real estate appraiser, died of colon cancer Monday, July 25, at Samaritan Healthcare and Hospice in Mount Holly.

Born in Gloucester City, Mr. Uibel graduated from Gloucester City High School in 1980, earned a bachelor's degree in theater arts at Rutgers-Camden, and in the late 1990s studied finance at Temple University.

From 2005 until illness forced him to retire in 2015, Mr. Uibel was a self-employed appraiser, working from a home office, said his spouse, Michael McKeown.

Mr. Uibel worked as a bank teller in Pennsauken in the 1980s and then as an accountant for the chemical firm Elf Aquitaine in Philadelphia.

A career change took place, McKeown said, after Mr. Uibel studied computer science at Chubb Institute in Philadelphia.

Mr. Uibel was a systems analyst for AT&T in New Brunswick, N.J., from the mid-1990s and for Verizon in Philadelphia from 2001 to 2005, McKeown said.

"He was very easygoing, witty, and smart," McKeown said, and they enjoyed their frequent trips to Broadway shows.

Maria La Pella, a retired Pine Hill schoolteacher, said she knew Mr. Uibel for 18 years.

"He was a romantic at heart," she said. "A beautiful person who would welcome people and make them feel special in his presence."

During his efforts over the years to find a solution to his cancer, she said, "Jim was amazing. What an inspiration."

Besides McKeown, his partner of 18 years, Mr. Uibel is survived by a brother and three sisters.

A viewing was set from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at the McCann-Healey Funeral Home, 851 Monmouth St., Gloucester City, before an 11 a.m. funeral there. Entombment is to be in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum in Cherry Hill.
