Righthander Dylan Porter fired a four-hitter to lead the Golden Rams past Kutztown, 6-0, on Sunday, for the championship of the NCAA Division II Atlantic baseball regional.
West Chester (42-10) earned a trip to the D-II College World Series in Cary, N.C. this weekend. The Golden Rams will open against Chico State of California (40-17) at 1 p.m. Saturday in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament.
Porter (5-1) was masterful right from the first pitch at Owls Field in West Lawn, Pa. The senior from Chesapeake High in Pasadena, Md., scattered four hits over nine innings, walking one and striking out seven.
"When you start stringing together outs everything just seems to come together and click," Porter said. "Coach [Jad] Prachniak has always put us in a position to succeed, and the infield has come up big all year."
Justin Lamborn (Garnet Valley) went 3 for 4 with a homer, two runs scored and three runs batted in.
Joe Wendle (Avon Grove) was 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Jack Provine and Josh Heyne each had two hits.
West Chester is making its third trip to the College World Series and first since 2009. The Golden Rams also reached the series in 2006.
"As the season progressed, I recognized we had a chance to do something special," said Prachniak, who is in his first season as head man. "We have been playing very consistently lately, and I think the starting pitching has set the tone."
Noteworthy: Kutztown finished 37-19. The Golden Bears also finished runner-up to West Chester in the finals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference tournament, also by shutout, 10-0. . . . Chico State defeated Dixie State, 7-3, in Keizer, Ore., in the West Region final Sunday to make the Series.
