The Phillies released John Bowker on Tuesday to allow him to pursue an opportunity with a professional team in Japan.

In a combined 31 games with the Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates last season, Bowker batted .133 with two RBIs. The 28-year-old outfielder spent most of the season at triple-A Indianapolis in the Pirates' system, hitting .306 with 15 home runs and 76 RBIs in 106 games.

For his major-league career, Bowker has hit .232 with 17 homers and 73 RBIs in 240 games with the San Francisco Giants, Pirates, and Phillies. He was a third-round pick by the Giants in the June 2004 draft.

The move leaves the Phillies with 39 players on the 40-man roster.
