Union extends Gaddis

Defender Ray Gaddis' contract extensions keeps him with the Union through 2016.

DEFENDER RAY GADDIS, the lone member of the Union to play in - let alone start - each of the team's 27 MLS games thus far, was rewarded this week with a multiyear contract extension, the club announced Wednesday.

The extension keeps Gaddis in town through the 2016 season, according to the Union's website. The team did not disclose terms of the deal.

Playing both left and right back, Gaddis, 24, has played all but 9 of 2,430 possible minutes in MLS play entering Saturday's 3 p.m. home game against the rival New York Red Bulls. The Union drafted Gaddis 35th overall in the 2012 SuperDraft.

"When you talk about Ray, I get a smile on my face because this is one of the things I'm most happy about in my short tenure as the coach, to get him rewarded for all his hard work," interim manager Jim Curtin said in a news release.

"Off the field, this is a tribute to his parents. They've raised a kid who has as good of character as I've ever seen in a human being. In terms of accepting challenges and taking on new roles - playing left back without complaining, working after practice every day on his weak foot and finding ways to get better - he does everything you ask and more."
