Whole Foods plans to open a smaller-format store in Center City sometime in the next two years, the company announced Wednesday.

A Whole Foods Market Daily Shop is set to open on the 2200 block of South Street, according to the release.

The address overlaps with that of an independent grocer, South Square Supermarket.

South Square’s owners could not be reached for comment by publication time Wednesday. A store manager declined to comment.

The news comes three months after Whole Foods’ parent company, Amazon, closed all physical Amazon Fresh locations, including six in the Philadelphia region. Some local Amazon Fresh customers said they would miss the stores’ small footprints and affordable prices.

Whole Foods’ Daily Shop locations also have what the company calls a “streamlined footprint” that “reflects an intentional approach to how products are curated and presented.” But Whole Foods does not have a reputation for affordability, according to national surveys and interviews with consumers.

“Daily Shop is an important part of how we’re growing our physical store presence,” Christina Minardi, vice president of real estate and store development at Whole Foods Market and Amazon, said in a statement. “As we expand this smaller format into new cities, we’re continuing to deliver the same high standards and carefully curated assortment Whole Foods Market is known for, in a way that meets our customers’ everyday needs.”

Daily Shops sell fresh produce, meat and seafood, prepared foods, bakery items, Whole Foods’ private-label products, and goods from local and regional suppliers, according to the company.

The first Daily Shop opened in New York in 2024. Now, there are eight Daily Shops in the New York metro area; Arlington, Va.; and London.

More Daily Shops are set to open in New York and London later this year, according to Whole Foods. Over the next two years, the company also plans to open Daily Shops in Boston and Chicago.

Whole Foods has more than 500 total stores nationwide, including more than a dozen in the Philadelphia area. In the city, they have locations on the 900 block of South Street and the 2100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue.

The company said the opening date for the Daily Shop in Philadelphia will be announced later.
